New Data Supports Long-Term Benefits of Valeda Light Therapy – for dry macular degeneration treatment

What is Valeda and How Does it Work?

 

Dry AMD is the most common form of age-related macular degeneration and the leading cause of vision loss in people over 60. It occurs when the central retina (macula) gradually deteriorates, making it harder to see fine detail.

Valeda® uses Photobiomodulation (PBM)—a gentle, painless light therapy that stimulates the retina at a cellular level. This process helps improve energy production in the cells and slows the progression of vision loss. It’s completely non-invasive and can even improve vision in some patients.

What Does the New Research Say?

 

The LIGHTSITE IIIB study, presented at the ARVO 2025 conference, showed impressive outcomes for patients with dry AMD treated using Valeda:

  • Patients received 9 sessions over 3–5 weeks, followed by retreatments every 4 months.

  • After 13 months, over 60% of participants still showed vision improvement of at least one line on the eye chart.

  • Some participants from earlier trials retained visual gains for over 4.5 years.

  • Most significantly, Valeda remains the only FDA-authorised treatment for dry AMD that improves vision, not just slows its decline.

Professor Quan Dong Nguyen of Stanford University, a co-investigator in the study, described Valeda as “an exciting first step in changing the standard of care for dry AMD.”
