Progressive Vision team at Optometry Ireland’s Spring CPD Day

April 28, 2026

Last month, the team at Progressive Vision was proud to attend Optometry Ireland’s Spring CPD Day in Limerick, joining colleagues from across the country for an important day of education, collaboration, and professional development.

Our Operations Manager, Suzanne, represented Progressive Vision on the exhibition stand, connecting with optometrists and eye care professionals, sharing insights about our services, and discussing how we continue to deliver exceptional patient care across our Sandyford and Swords clinics.
At the same event, our Clinical Lead Optometrist, Katie, delivered an insightful presentation on a fascinating and increasingly important topic: the link between cognitive impairment and cataracts.

Understanding the Connection Between Cataracts and Cognitive Health

Cataracts are one of the most common causes of vision changes as we age. They occur when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, leading to blurred, misty, or hazy vision. This happens gradually over time as the proteins in the lens become more compacted, affecting how light reaches the retina .
While cataracts are often considered simply an eye health issue, growing research suggests there may be an important connection between vision loss and cognitive decline.

Reduced vision can affect independence, confidence, mobility, and social interaction—all of which play a key role in maintaining cognitive wellbeing. Difficulty reading, recognising faces, driving, or managing everyday tasks can contribute to isolation and reduced mental stimulation.
Katie’s talk explored how identifying and treating cataracts early may not only improve vision, but could also help support better overall quality of life and cognitive health for older adults.

Events like the Association of Optometrists Ireland Spring CPD Day are a valuable opportunity to strengthen relationships with community optometrists and continue improving patient pathways for cataract care, dry eye treatment, retinal services, glaucoma management, and paediatric ophthalmology.

At Progressive Vision, collaboration is central to everything we do. By working closely with optometrists and healthcare professionals, we help ensure patients receive the right care at the right time.
